IALS TrueNAS server: Account request and user agreement
ABOUT THE SERVER
IALS owns a multi-petabyte network attached storage (IALS NAS) unit that is housed on the UMass Amherst campus. IALS/IT staff maintain the software and configuration while UMass Amherst IT maintains network connections and Active Directory (AD) settings. Hardware is maintained by a conglomerate of the above at the time of this writing. All IALS Core facilities users can be provided with access to the IALS NAS at no charge.
REQUESTING ACCESS AND ACCOUNTS
All users of the IALS NAS need a UMass NetID to authenticate via AD. External users of the cores must be sponsored by affiliated Core Facility staff for a NENS account to request access. Access is granted on a faculty/sponsor basis. Faculty/sponsors must acknowledge the items listed on this sheet and pay close attention to their own data integrity as it is not the responsibility of IALS, the core facilities, nor UMass Amherst IT.

STORAGE ORGANIZATION
You agree that approved users will have shared access to a folder with their colleagues named in the following unique formats: PI last name Lab, PI UMass NetID (e.g. Smythe Lab, NetID Lab). All requested and approved users from that lab/group will have Read and Write access. Faculty/sponsors are responsible for all storage usage by members of their groups.
DATA REDUNDANCY
You agree that data stored on the IALS NAS must have a copy elsewhere. The IALS NAS is not a storage solution nor a backup solution. It is only to be used as a method to temporarily move, visualize, or analyze data.
ACCOUNT EXPIRATION
You agree that accounts on the IALS NAS will expire when users leave the University. Additionally, individual user accounts will be reviewed three times per year (1/1, 6/1, 9/1) and the accounts deemed inactive by the faculty member will have their access removed. A list of accounts with access to each folder will be provided and the names of those to be removed should be returned to IALS/IT (it-ials-nas@groups.umass.edu) within 10 business days.
DATA REVIEW EXPECTATIONS
Faculty/sponsors are expected to review data in their assigned directories on an annual basis and remove any inactive data. Folder size is limited to 10 TB per faculty/sponsor. Faculty/sponsors are responsible for ensuring that all files are properly managed or removed when accounts expire. IALS reserves the right to delete expired accounts and all files associated with them, as free space needs to increase for current users.
DATA POOLS
Two data pools will be available on the IALS NAS, SENSD and IALS-Core-Shared. Data that includes sensitive information, e.g. PII, PHI, HIPAA, ITAR, or other sensitive data should be stored on the SENSD volume – please ask the IALS Core Staff if you have questions about what drive is mounted to Core terminals. All other data should be stored on the IALS-Core-Shared volume. These pools will be provisioned as separate mountable drives on IALS Core Facility Workstations. You agree that you and your approved users will store relevant and appropriate data in the respective network drives. We encourage groups to consider which class your IALS Core Facility generated data falls into, and request access to only the appropriate pool(s).  If you need access to SENSD, please discuss these needs with the core facility staff to arrange access.
